How to care for uPVC decking
Posted by Greg Parkins on
There are many benefits of choosing uPVC decking, one of which is its self-sustaining durability. Though this material comes in many colours, styles and variations, the cleaning process for uPVC decking remains the same.
Routine cleaning may not be at the top of your jobs list, nor your favourite past time, but the beauty of uPVC decking is how easy it is to maintain.
A decent treatment routine will make for easy work when it comes to brightening up or fixing the surface. Combined with the easiness uPVC, this useful guide will help make the process fuss free.
Keeping the surface clean
It may be an obvious one, but failing to frequently brush away dirt and debris can cause considerable damage to your deck. Damp, muddy leaves and branches won’t necessarily rot uPVC decking but can scratch it.
Removing any unwanted items regularly will prevent a build-up of grime and keep your decking looking neat and tidy all year round.
Simply use a soft broom to sweep away any fallen elements, waiting until wet items are dry to prevent them from sticking to the grooves. For more stubborn or sticky stains, you may want to use a wet cleaning solution or other maintenance products to clean your decking.
What should I use to clean my decking?
With uPVC, there’s no secret formula to removing mess. Rinsing with soapy warm water and brushing away with a soft brush will do the trick.
Never use bleach or chlorine to wash your decking as this can cause discolouration or damage to the paint work.
How to deep clean uPVC decking
If you keep on top of it, you’ll only need to deep clean your decking every 1-2 months – depending on where you live and what season you’re in. A weekly clean will consist of brushing your decking and giving it a quick rinse if needs be, but when it’s ready for it, here’s how to give it a thorough cleaning.
- Create a completely empty space, by removing all debris with a soft brush
- Rinse with lukewarm water (you can use a hose with a light flow or a bucket)
- Rinse with the lukewarm water and a soap solution
- Using a soft brush or cloth, scrub the decking gently, focusing stubborn stains
- Rinse again with just water
- Leave to air dry
Can you use a jet wash on uPVC decking?
Like with any decking, you can use a jet wash, but make sure it’s on the lowest setting and the nozzle is on the widest. Stand 12 to 18 inches away from the boards, as a close range could damage it.
If you are a little nervous about using a jet wash or pressure washer, then consider hiring a professional or fellow deck owner to help!
What to avoid using on decking:
You may have noticed that a soft brush and soapy water is really all you need to care for your garden deck. In fact, it may be easier to know what to avoid instead.
Harsh chemicals
As well as harsh chemicals like bleach, you should also avoid harsh wire brushes or stiff cloths. This can scratch and damage the surface. If you need to clear tougher stains, or substances such as snow, never use a shovel or other metal device.
Focus on giving a little extra attention to that area when deep cleaning with the soapy water solution.
Metal objects
It is best to avoid metal all together, as leaving such objects on your decking can cause stains. This includes tables, chairs, pots or mats with metal grommets in them. This is the same for rubber or latex backed mats too.
Opt for vinyl or synthetic materials instead.
Open fires
Another mistake individuals make is assuming that uPVC is heat resistant. This is not the case. Do not use a fire pit or BBQ on the decking without a stand, as the heat or fireflies can scorch the exterior and cause a fire.

When the unthinkable does happen and you stain your deck, whether that be a metal object that’s been left for a long period of time or an accidental chip, warm water just isn’t enough.
You may need to use a cleaner concentrate such as the which is trusted and chosen by professionals and manufacturers. This eco-friendly cleaner is versatile, so can also be used for many areas around your home including vinyl, metal, aluminium, flagstones, pavers, and more.
